About Dave Wottle
The highlight of Dave Wottle's track and field career came at the 1972 Olympics when he won gold for Team USA in the 800 meters. The images that Wottle is best remembered for that live on today are those of him running while wearing his signature golf cap. Prior to his Olympic triumph, he won the 1,500-meter race at the 1972 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships while competing for Bowling Green. Leading up to the Games, Wottle also won the AAU 800-meter title and set a world record in the distance at the U.S. Olympic Trials. The year after his run in Munich, he became an NCAA champion for the second time by winning in the mile. Wottle went on to work as a university administrator at Rhodes College from 1983-2012.
