About Marty Liquori
Marty Liquori is a retired American middle-distance runner widely regarded as one of the greatest in U.S. track and field history. From Cedar Grove, New Jersey, he burst onto the scene as a high school senior at Essex Catholic, becoming only the third American teenager to break four minutes in the mile with a 3:59.8 in 1967. At Villanova University under legendary coach Jumbo Elliott, Liquori won three straight NCAA mile titles (1969–71), multiple AAU championships, and defeated world-record holder Jim Ryun in the memorable 1971 “Dream Mile.” He was ranked world No. 1 in the 1500m/mile in 1969 and 1971. A 1968 Olympian, he later excelled at 5000m, setting American records and winning Pan Am gold. After retiring in 1980, Liquori co-founded the Athletic Attic retail chain, authored several running books, and became a prominent TV commentator for multiple Olympics and marathons.
