About Bob Beamon
Bob Beamon is a former track and field athlete. His career began in high school where he was an All-American and ranked second in the long jump in the United States and set a national high school triple jump record. That success earned him a track and field scholarship to the University of Texas at El Paso. In 2008 after leaving UTEP Beamon was a part of the 1968 Olympic Summer games in Mexico City. While there he won the gold medal in the long jump by breaking the previous world record by nearly two feet. That record would stand for nearly 23 years. That jump was named as one of the five greatest sports moments of the 20th century by Sports Illustrated. Beamon is a part of the National Track and Field Hall of Fame and became one of the first athletes to be inducted into the United States Olympic Hall of Fame in 1983.
