About Cito Gaston
Clarence “Cito” Gaston had two career paths he could follow: truck driver or a Major League Baseball player. Unsurprisingly enough, Gaston chose to pursue the career that would take him to the MLB. In 1967, Gaston was signed by the Atlanta Braves where he began a 9 year playing career with the Braves, San Diego Padres, and Pittsburgh Pirates. Gaston had one standout year when he batted .318 and scored 92 runs on his way to a NL All-Star appearance. After his playing years were over, Gaston signed on with the Toronto Blue Jays where he was initially a hitting coach. After 7 seasons as an assistant, Gaston took over managerial duties. In just three seasons, Gaston turned around a sub-par franchise and took them to back to back World Series victories in 1992 and 1993, making Gaston the first African American manager to win a World Series in MLB history. Gaston relieved himself of managerial duties in 1997 when he failed to create winning teams. He came back as manager of the Blue Jays for another stint from 2008-2010 and finished his managerial career with 894 wins.
