About Larry Bowa
Larry Bowa is a former professional baseball shortstop, manager and coach in Major League Baseball. Bowa attended Sacramento City College and was expected to go in the MLB Draft, but he did not. At that time, only the Philadelphia Phillies were interested in Bowa. Bowa played for the Phillies from 1970-1981 where he won the Gold Glove Award in 1972 and 1980. He was also a 5x All-Star as a Phillies and World Series Champion in 1980. Bowa played for the Chicago Cubs from 1982-85 and played with the NY Mets in 1985. After retiring from playing, Bowa became the manager for the LA Stars for the 1986 season. On October 28, 1986, Bowa was hired to manage the San Diego Padres and was soon fired on May 28, 1988. Bowa then returned the Phillies as the team’s third base coach on August 11, 1988 and remained through the 1996 season. Bowa was named the manager of the Phillies on November 1, 2000 where he stayed until 2004. Bowa took a year off of coaching to be an analyst for ESPN’s Baseball Tonight talk show. In 2006, he returned to coaching and has coached for the Yankees, Dodgers and Phillies.
