About Brendan Shanahan
Brendan Shanahan is a former professional hockey player and current NHL executive with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He got his start in the NHL with the New Jersey Devils, as he was drafted second overall in the 1987 NHL Draft by the team. Shanahan’s four seasons as a Devil were good ones, as he scored 214 points and helped the Devils reach the playoffs three times. Shanahan became a free agent in 1991, and he signed with the St. Louis Blues, playing four seasons with the team before being traded to the Hartford Whalers. In one season as a Whaler, Shanahan was named an All Star, but due to the uncertainty of the team’s future Shanahan asked and received a trade to the Detroit Red Wings. His nine seasons with the Red Wings would be the best of his career, as he would help the team win three Stanley Cups and be named to five All Star teams. Shanahan would leave the Red Wings to play for the New York Rangers in 2006, and would make his final All-Star appearance in 2007 with the team. In 2008, Shanahan returned to the Devils for one last season, retiring afterwards to pursue a career within the executive side of hockey.
