About Bobby Johnson
Bobby Johnson got his start in big time college football as a wide receiver and cornerback at Clemson University from 1969 to 1972. During that time he led the Tigers in interceptions and earned ACC All-Academic honors twice in route to earning his degree in management in 1973. Upon his graduation from Clemson he headed to Furman University as an assistant coach and earned his master’s degree in education in 1979. After the 1979 season he became a full-time assistant coach at Furman from 1981 to 1992 and then signed on as the defensive coordinator at Clemson in 1993. After one season at Clemson he returned to Furman as the head coach from 1994 to 2001 and led them to two Southern Conference Championships. In 2002 he was hired as the head coach at Vanderbilt and led the Commodores to 29 wins in route to winning SEC Coach of the Year honors in 2008.
