Bob Boone

Bob Boone is a former catcher and manager in the Major Leagues. Boone was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the sixth round of the 1969 amateur draft after attending Stanford University. Throughout his career he was never known for his hitting prowess, with only a .254 career batting average, but he was a force to be reckoned with when he had the catchers gear on. In the 1977 season he only allowed three passed balls. That kind of defensive work propelled Boone to the All-Star game four times, and earned him seven Gold Glove Awards, as well as a World Series victory in 1980. After retiring from playing Bob took a few years off before returning to the majors as a manager where he managed the Royals and Reds between 1995 and 2003. There are four members of the Boone family that have made it to the major leagues and become All-Stars including Bob’s father and two sons.
