Billy Wagner Biography

Billy Wagner is a former relief pitcher for teams in Major League Baseball. His success began in high school when he compiled a .451 batting average, 116 strikeouts and a 7-1 record in 46 innings his senior year. He followed that up in college when Wagner set the single season NCAA record for strikeouts per nine innings and fewest hits allowed per nine innings. As a first round pick by the Astros in the 1993 MLB Draft. Billy went on to play in 853 games with 1,196 strikeouts and become one of only a select few pitchers to record more than 400 saves. All of that could have never happened though, as Wagner broke his right arm twice as a child and had to learn to throw with his left arm instead. Obviously it worked out because Wagner was elected as an All-Star seven times during his career along with being the Relief Man of the Year in 1999. Wagner officially retired in 2011, and since then has become a coach to teach the next generation of future stars.
