Cal Ripken Jr Biography

He’s baseball’s “Iron Man”, and one of the best players to ever lace up a pair of cleats and step foot on the diamond.  From 1981 to 2001 Cal Ripken Jr. was the gold standard when it came to consistency, playing in an MLB record 2,632 consecutive games and collecting 3,184 hits.  When he joined the Baltimore Orioles in 1981 at the tender age of 20 and captured the AL Rookie of the Year in 1982 at age 21 it was evident that he was going to be a special player.  Two decades later he had become a 19-time All-Star, two-time AL MVP, won two Gold Gloves and eight more Silver Slugger Awards.

When Ripken Jr. retired in 2001 he was awarded the Commissioner’s Historic Achievement Award for his historic achievements on the field and contributions to the game of baseball.  He was later honored with induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007, during his first year of eligibility.

In retirement he has remained close to the game, serving as the chairman of the AFLAC All-American game, and purchasing several minor league baseball teams.  In 2007 he signed on with TBS Sports as a studio analyst, and has since provided expert insight during the MLB Playoffs each year.
