Allan Houston Biography

Notorious for big game heroics, Allan Houston became one of the most well known and highest paid NBA players in the 1990s and 2000s Houston averaged 17.3 points per game during his 12 year career with the Detroit Pistons and New York Knicks.  He was a two time All-Star and won a gold medal in the Olympics with Team USA in 2000.  Houston saw postseason action five times including a trip to the 1999 NBA Finals with the Knicks.  The most famous play of his career came against the Miami Heat in the 1999 Eastern Conference quarterfinals.  Houston made a jumper with 0.8 seconds on the clock to win the game and the series over the top seeded Heat.  In 2001, he signed what was one of the biggest contract extensions in league history, a six year, 100 million dollar pact.  Unfortunately, injuries would plague the rest of his career, prompting the NBA to institute the “amnesty clause” which would allow a team to erase a bad contract off the books in the future.  Houston, a native of Louisville, Kentucky, played his college basketball at Tennessee, where his number is retired.
