About Yao Ming
Yao Ming was an international superstar and beloved in his native China. Partly due to his wide popularity, Yao started eight All-Star Games. He was also a five-time All-NBA pick and at 7’6” the tallest player in the league during his career. After being the first overall pick in the 2002 NBA Draft, Yao played his entire pro career in America with the Houston Rockets. The Rockets went to the playoffs four times with him and won their first playoff series since 1997 in 2009. Prior to his time in the U.S., Yao played five seasons with the Shanghai Sharks of the Chinese Basketball Association. He played in three Olympics with China and was the flag bearer for his country at home in Beijing in 2008. No one is more responsible for the explosion of the NBA brand in China. Both of Yao’s parents were professional basketball players. He supports many charitable causes and is currently an activist against the harvesting of ivory from elephant tusks.
