About Hakeem Olajuwon
Hakeem Olajuwon is a retired NBA center, and is famous for his time spent with the Houston Rockets. Originally born in Nigeria, Olajuwon immigrated to the United States to play collegiate basketball for the University of Houston, but rarely saw any playing time his freshman season. Under his coach’s advice, Olajuwon trained under NBA legend Moses Malone, and returned to dominate his sophomore year, leading the Cougars to the 1983 NCAA title game. In 1984, Olajuwon dominated again, taking the Cougars back to the title game, winning the NCAA Tournament Player of the Year. Driven by his wanting to play for the Houston Rockets, Olajuwon entered the 1984 NBA Draft, where he was the first player selected by the Rockets. The Rockets would immediately feel the impact of drafting Olajuwon, as they improved drastically, as they returned to the playoffs in 1986, making it all the way to the NBA Finals. In 1989, Olajuwon became the undisputed team leader, eventually leading the Rockets to the 1994 NBA title. After a short two year stint with the Toronto Raptors, Olajuwon retired, ending his amazing career. Olajuwon was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2008, after a career in which he won two championships and one MVP.
