About Steve Wilks
Steve Wilks is the current defensive coordinator for the New York Jets. Wilks is best known for serving as the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals. He was hired by the Cardinals for the 2018 season after spending six seasons on the coaching staff of the Carolina Panthers.
Wilks was the Panthers defensive coordinator in 2017. He previously spent five seasons coaching the Carolina secondary. Wilks also spent two seasons as the Panthers assistant head coach. In 2016, the Wilks-coached secondary tied for the NFC lead with 17 interceptions. His unit also helped Carolina lead the NFL in interceptions, total takeaways and turnover differential in 2016. The team advanced to Super Bowl 50 that season.
From 2009-11, Wilks was the secondary coach for the San Diego Chargers. He also made a Super Bowl appearance during three seasons as the defensive backs coach with the Chicago Bears. Before jumping into the NFL ranks,
Wilks coached the defensive backs for top college football programs like Washington and Notre Dame. He began his coaching career as a defensive coordinator at Johnson C. Smith and Savannah State. Wilks was the head coach at Savannah State in 1999 and compiled a 5-6 record. He also coached defensive backs at Illinois State, AppalachianState and Bowling Green. Wilks spent one season as the defensive coordinator at East Tennessee State.
