Steve Gleason

When you hear the name Steve Gleason, you’ll probably think of his contribution to one of the most dramatic moments in Saints history in September of 2006. Still suffering from the extreme tragedy of Hurricane Katrina, devouring the city and team, Gleason made the first move to turn the Saints’ 21-month dry spell around and instill some hope in the community. After blocking a punt by Michael Koenen from the Atlanta Falcons early on in the first quarter, Gleason aided the team in scoring their first touchdown in 21 months. Furthermore, this play marked an unexpected win and an even more unexpected successful season; in fact, the most successful season in their history up to that time. Gleason was awarded a Super Bowl ring by the Saints in 2011 and at the same ceremony, he received a key to the city of New Orleans by the mayor, following the creation of a statue in his name that was entitled “Rebirth” and depicted Gleason blocking the punt. This statue can be found outside the Superdome to this day. Steve Gleason served a total of 8 years with the NFL, making his debut with the Indianapolis Colts for a single season as a free agent in 2000. Throughout his career, Gleason played in 83 games, had 59 solo tackles and 6 assisted tackles. Even after his time on the football field, he has continued to be an inspiration due to his battle with ALS.
