About Shirley Babashoff
Shirley Babashoff is a former competition swimmer. Growing up, Babashoff’s father was a swimming instructor and had always wanted his children to become Olympians. Babashoff won the gold medal in the 400-meter freestyle relay at the 1972 Olympics. In 1975, she won the World Championship in the 200-meter and 400-meter freestyle. Babashoff competed in the 1976 Olympic trials where she won all of the freestyle events and the 400-meter individual medley. During the trials, she set one world record and six national records. At the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Babashoff won four silver medals and one gold medal. She won the silver in the 200-meter, 400-meter, 800-meter freestyle and the 4x100-meter medley relay. Babashoff won the gold medal in the 4x100-meter freestyle relay and she won it in world time. Babashoff was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1982. When her Olympic career ended, Babashoff coached swimming. On April 30, 2005, she received the highest award of the Olympic Movement: the Olympic Order.
