Roman Gabriel Biography

Playing quarterback at North Carolina State University, Roman Gabriel set 22 school and conference records in his three years as a starter. Twice in a row he won the ACC Player of the Year honors and in 1989 was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. Gabrial was selected 1st overall in the AFL Draft and 2nd overall in the NFL Draft, where he signed with the Los Angeles Rams. Playing his first 10 seasons with the Rams, Gabriel threw for 22,223 yards which was a franchise record and still holds the franchise record for career TDs with 154. He was selected to 4 Pro Bowls, was the NFL MVP in 1969, and in 1973 he was awarded the NFL Comeback Player of the Year award. He retired from the NFL after 16 seasons, finishing with 29,444 career passing yards. Gabriel was also the first Asian American to become a starting QB in the NFL.
