About Ricky Rudd
Ricky Rudd is a retired NASCAR driver. Known as the "Iron Man" of the sport for holding the record for most consecutive starts in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series with 788, he retired in 2007 having competed in a total of 906 races in 32 years.
Rudd'streak of consecutive starts was in jeopardy in 1984. He was involved in a crash at Daytona in which his car flipped and Rudd suffered a concussion his eyes were swollen so badly that they had to be taped open in order for him to race in the Daytona 500. It was because of that event that led NASCAR to instituting rules to examine drivers after accidents to ensure they are fit to compete.
Rudd finished his career with 23 wins in the premier series of the sport including a win in the 1997 Brickyard 400 as well as a championship in the IROC series. His contribution to the sport also led him to be named as one of NASCAR's 50 Greatest Drivers of all-time and a NASCAR Hall of Famer.
