About R.C. Slocum
R.C. Slocum graduated from Stark High School in Orange, Texas in 1963 and attended McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana on a football scholarship. After earning his bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1967 and master’s degree in educational administration in 1968 he turned his focus to coaching and landed the defensive coordinator position at Lake Charles High School from 1968 to 1969. In 1970 he headed to Kansas State University as an assistant coach and then coached at Texas A&M as an assistant from 1972 to 1978 and defensive coordinator from 1979 to 1980. After one season as the defensive coordinator at the University of Southern California in 1981 he returned to Texas A&M as defensive coordinator from 1982 to 1988. In 1989 he was promoted to head coach and went on to lead the Aggies to 123 wins over the next 13 seasons, including three Southwest Conference Championships and two Big 12 Conference titles. Coach Slocum retired in 2002 and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2012.
