About Phil Martelli
Phil Martelli is the longtime head basketball coach at St. Joseph’s who has taken the Hawks to six NCAA Tournaments. Martelli has been a coach at the school since 1985 and head coach since 1995. In just his second season running the show, the Hawks went 26-7, won the Atlantic 10, and made a run to the Sweet Sixteen. St. Joseph’s has won either the A-10 regular season or tournament title five times. Their best season under Martelli came in 2003-04. The Hawks had a 27-0 regular season and went all the way to the Elite Eight. Naismith College Player of the Year Jameer Nelson and fellow future pros Delonte West and Dwyane Jones led them. Martelli also won Naismith and AP College Coach of the Year. He has four A-10 Coach of the Year awards in his career. Martelli became the school’s all-time wins leader in 2011. His coaching career started at his alma mater, Division III Widener University. Martelli set single-season and career assist records at the school. He is the chair of the Coaches vs. Cancer National Council and co-chair of the Philadelphia branch of the foundation.
