About Phil Garner
Phil Garner is a former major league player and manager who achieved success in both avenues. As a manager, he took the Houston Astros to their first World Series in 2005. Garner also piloted the Milwaukee Brewers for eight seasons and the Detroit Tigers for three. In his first season as a manager with the Brewers in 1992, the club went 92-70. The three-time All-Star played for five different teams. Garner hit .417 in the 1979 World Series that was won by the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Oakland A’s originally signed him in 1971 and he played his first four seasons for them. The Jefferson City, Tennessee native played at the University of Tennessee. Alma mater Bearden High School has named their field after Garner. Garner is currently a special advisor for the A’s.
