Margaret Hoelzer Biography

Margaret Hoelzer is a three-time Olympic medalist in swimming who has used her platform to serve as an advocate for sexual abuse survivors. Hoelzer set the world record in the 200 meter backstroke during her career. She swam in both the 2004 and 2008 Olympics, winning silver medals in the 200 m back and 4x100 medley relay and a bronze in the 100 m back in 2008. Hoelzer had her first success on the international stage when she won a gold in the 200 m back at the 2002 Pan Pacific Championships. She also medaled three times in the event at the World Championships.

Hoelzer retired from competitive swimming in 2010 and has become a speaker regarding sexual abuse. She has shared her story across the country and also in the Darkness to Light training video, Stewards of Children. Hoelzer has been a spokesperson for the National Children's Advocacy Center. She also spends her time teaching youth swim clinics.
