About Larry Merchant
Larry Merchant is a former sportswriter, and a longtime commentator for HBO Sports. He is considered, “the greatest television boxing analyst of all time” by ESPN Boxing analyst Dan Rafael. Prior to joining HBO Sports, Merchant was a wellregarded sports columnist with The Philadelphia Daily News and he served as a general reporter for The New York Post. Merchant joined HBO Sports as an analyst in 1978. Merchant was part of the HBO Boxing commentary team for championship and pay-per-view fights. Many fighters have clashed with Merchant during his career such as Mike Tyson, Oscar de la Hoya and Floyd Mayweather Jr. Merchant is well known for his post fight interviews that feature hard-hitting, blunt questions and confrontational interview style. He received the Sam Taub Award for boxing Broadcast Journalism in 1985. In October 2002, Merchant was inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame in Los Angeles. December 15, 2012, was Merchant’s last telecast after being a boxing commentator on HBO for 35 years.
