About John Cook
John Cook is a retired American volleyball head coach who turned the Nebraska Cornhuskers volleyball team into a national powerhouse. Born April 19, 1956, in Chula Vista, Calif., Cook played college basketball at the University of San Diego and earned a history degree in 1979. Soon after, he earned a master’s in teaching at San Diego State. He went on to teach geography at Francis Parker School in San Diego and decided to learn how to coach volleyball. This tenure culminated in a 162-18 record with two state titles for the Lancers. He transitioned to the collegiate ranks and coached UC San Diego to a Division III title in 1984, leading him to Madison, Wis., where he went 161-73 with the Wisconsin Badgers volleyball team across seven seasons. Cook then went to Nebraska and won a national championship his first year in Lincoln, Neb., going 34-0. He guided the Huskers to four national championships (2000, 2006, 2015, 2017), 12 NCAA semifinal appearances, and 14 conference titles (nine in the Big 12, five in the Big Ten).
