About John Carlos
John Carlos became a part of Olympic history in the summer of 1968. After winning the bronze medal in the 200-meters, he and teammate Tommie Smith took the podium with hands raised in a Black Power salute. A year later, Carlos tied the world record in the 100m. He also led San Jose State to their first national championship and won individual NCAA titles in the 100 and 220. Carlos was actually selected in the 1970 NFL Draft, but never played in the league. He spent one season in the Canadian Football League before going on to work for Puma and the United States Olympic Committee. Carlos was also part of the organizing committee for the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. He spenttime as an in-school suspension supervisor and track coach at Palm Springs High School. Carlos is a member of the National Track & Field Hall of Fame and a statue of he and Smith is erected at San Jose State. The duo also received the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the 2008 ESPYs.
