About Jim Rutherford
Jim Rutherford is one of the most successful general managers in hockey today. He has been the GM of the Pittsburgh Penguins since 2014. Under Rutherford's watch, the Penguins won back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in 2016 and 2017. Rutherford was named NHL General Manager of the Year in 2016. He has another Stanley Cup win on his resume as the general manager of the Carolina Hurricanes in 2006. Rutherford originally joined that organization when they were still the Hartford Whalers in 1994. He served as the franchise's president and GM for 20 years and helped them with their transition to Raleigh, North Carolina in 1997. Rutherford gained experience as a hockey executive in the Ontario Hockey League. He also worked with the Compuware Sports Corporation for 30 years. Rutherford's successful tenure as an executive came on the heels of a 13-year goaltending career in the NHL. The Detroit Red Wings originally selected him in the first round of the 1969 NHL Draft. He played in 457 games for four different franchises. While with the Red Wings, Rutherford became an early pioneer of wearing a decorated goalie mask.
