About Jeff Samardzija
The Chicago Cubs selected Jeff Samardzija in the 5th round of the 2006 MLB Draft out of the University of Notre Dame. During his days in South Bend he starred on the baseball diamond and on the gridiron for the Fighting Irish. To give some indication as to his two-sport prowess, he led the Big East Conference in ERA and opponents batting average as a pitcher his freshman year and also earned AllAmerican honors in football after catching 78 passes for 1,017 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2006. Samardzija finished his college career with a Notre Dame record 2,593 receiving yards. After his senior year he decided to pursue a career in college baseball and signed with the Cubs. He made his MLB debut in 2008 after just two years in the minors and has since become one of the top right-handers in the league, earning All-Star honors in 2014 after posting a 2.99 ERA in 33 starts for both the Chicago Cubs and Oakland Athletics.
