About Ila Borders
Ila Borders is an independent professional baseball player. Borders’ father was a former minor league baseball player who taught Borders how to play baseball and take care of her arm. Baseball was the Borders’ pastime and it became a passion for Borders. Borders was the second woman pitcher to start a men’s NCAA or NAIA college baseball team when she played for Southern California College and Whittier College. In 1997, Borders became the first woman pitcher in integrated men’s professional baseball when she signed with the St. Paul Saints. After a month with the Saints, Borders was traded to the Duluth-Superior Dukes. On July 7, 1998, Borders was named the starting pitcher of the Dukes and became the first woman pitcher to start a men’s professional baseball game. In 1999, Borders requested a trade and went to the Madison Black Wolf. She also played for the Zion Pioneerzz. Borders currently serves as a firefighter and emergency medical technician.
