About Gerry Cheevers
Gerry “Cheesey” Cheevers’ professional hockey career spanned 25 years. He is most well-known for his time with the Boston Bruins, in which he helped them to two Stanley Cup titles in 1970 and 1972. Overall, he played for seven teams in five different leagues including the NHL and World Hockey Association. During his playing career he was one of the best goaltenders in the business, winning 230 NHL games and recording 26 NHL shutouts. In 1985 he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame as a player after announcing his retirement in 1980.
After his playing career came to an end he turned his attention to coaching and enjoyed the same success in the coaching box, leading his teams to an overall record of 204-126-46 record, ranking him 7th all-time with a career winning percentage of .604. In his post hockey career he served as a color commentator for the Hartford Whalers from 1986 to 1995 and returned to announce for the Bruins from 1999 to 2002. He then joined the Bruins’ scouting staff for eleven years from 1996 to 2006. Since that time he’s devoted his time to his family and his other interest, horse racing.
