About Ennette Nneka
At the 2024 Paris Olympics Annette Nneka Echikunwoke became the first U.S. woman to win a medal in the hammer throw when she took silver. She was born on July 29, 1996, in Pickerington, Ohio, and she is 6 feet tall and has experience in both discus and weight throw sports.
Echikunwoke started her athletic career at the University of Cincinnati where she graduated with a bachelor’s and master’s degree and became the first NCAA champion in track and field by winning the 2017 indoor weight throw.
She continued to break barriers by setting Nigerian and African hammer records—reaching 75.49 m in Tucson in 2021—that ranked her among the top in the world.
Echikunwoke was originally set to represent Nigeria at the Tokyo 2020 Games but was disqualified by the Nigerian federation due to missed doping test protocols. She switched allegiance to the U.S. and returned stronger—claiming Olympic silver in Paris with a throw of 75.48 m.
Now residing in Ohio, Echikunwoke continues to rank among the world’s top hammer throwers (currently seventh) and balances her training with advocacy and community involvement, marking a remarkable journey defined by resilience and excellence.
