About Donnie Nelson
For 24 years, Donnie Nelson was a pivotal part of the Dallas Mavericks organization. Nelson is one of the people most credited with the Mavs acquisition of two generational talents, Dirk Nowitzki and Luka Doncic. He was brought up through the sport by his father, former NBA head coach, Don Nelson. Nelson's first NBA jobwas as a regional scout for the Milwaukee Bucks from 1984-1986. He then joined his dad's staff with the Golden State Warriors from 1986-94. Nelson was also an assistant with the Phoenix Suns from 1995-98. He became the assistant general manager of the Mavericks in 1998. Nelson orchestrated moves that resulted in the team making their first NBA Finals appearance in 2006 and winning the championship in 2011. Nelson has long been one of the main advocates working to expand basketball globally. He has been an assistant coach for the Lithuania national basketball team and a chief advisor to the Chinese national basketball team.
