About Darian DeVries
Darian DeVries is the head men’s basketball coach at Indiana University. He grew up on an 80-acre family farm in Aplington, Iowa, where he developed a strong work ethic. He is the oldest of five athletic siblings, including brother Jared, a 12-year NFL veteran. DeVries played basketball and football at Aplington-Parkersburg High School and was a point guard at Northern Iowa (1994–98), averaging 10.0 points over 108 games. He earned a B.A. in elementary education and an M.S. in college counseling from Creighton.
DeVries began coaching as a graduate manager at Creighton (1998–2001), becoming an assistant coach in 2001 under Dana Altman and Greg McDermott, contributing to 11 NCAA Tournament bids over 17 years. In 2018, he took over at Drake University, transforming a struggling program with a 150–55 record over six seasons, three NCAA Tournament appearances (2021, 2023, 2024), and two MVC Coach of the Year awards (2019, 2021). His 2021 team won Drake’s first NCAA Tournament game in 50 years. In 2024, he coached West Virginia to a 19–13 record, doubling the prior season’s wins despite injuries, including to his son Tucker, a two-time MVC Player of the Year.
Indiana hired him in March 2025.
