About Dabo Swinney
Dabo Swinney, named William Christopher Swinney at birth, is a college football coach currently serving as the head coach at Clemson University. A former player himself, Swinney was born in 1969 in Birmingham, Alabama and was given his nickname by his then 18-month-old brother who could not pronounce his name. Swinney attended the Univeristy of Alabama and played from the Crimson Tide football team as a walk-on wide receiver in 1989. He was recognized with numerous awards for his outstanding academic achievements in addition to his athletic career and ultimately graduated from the university with a degree in business administration. Swinney obtained his first coaching position as an assistant at his alma mater. He coached with Alabama until 2000 and then moved on as an assistant coach for the wide receivers at Clemson in 2003. Swinney became the head coach at Clemson University in 2008 and has since led the program to unprecedented success. The Tigers have won national championships under his watch in 2016 and 2018. Swinney's teams are annual contenders to win the ACC and he has been named conference Coach of the Year twice. He has also received several national coaching awards.
