About Claire Smith
Claire Smithis a pioneer for all women in sports media. From 1983-87, she served as the beat writer for the Hartford Courant, covering the New York Yankees. She was the first female beat writer in Major League Baseball. Smith went on to serve as a columnist for the New York Times from 1991-98. She went on to the Philadelphia Inquirer to be an editor and columnist. Smith is currently a news editor for ESPN. She is a two-time Pulitzer Prize nominee and the recipient of three New York Times Publishers' Awards. In 2017, she became the first female winner of the Baseball Hall of Fame's J.G. Taylor Spink Award. Smith is a graduate of Temple University.
