Chris Webber

Chris Webber drew early comparisons to the great Magic Johnson as one of the most highly recruited high school players to ever come out of Michigan. Webber stayed close to home by accepting a scholarship to play for the University of Michigan, where he was a part of the talented recruiting class dubbed “The Fab Five”. The Fab Five and their “bad boys” demeanor took the Wolverines to two consecutive D1 NCAA Men’s Championships as freshman and sophomores, failing to win either time. Perhaps one of Webber’s most horrifying moments from his college days, he took the ball up the court in the ’93 Championship and called a timeout at a time when the Wolverines were out of timeouts, ultimately costing his team the game and the Championship. Following his stand out sophomore year when he was a finalist for college basketball’s Player of the Year, Webber was indicted by a federal grand jury for taking over $200,000 throughout his two years at UM from an athletics booster, Ed Martin. Michigan was stripped of all the achievements the Fab Five had earned in those two seasons which led Webber to declare for the NBA Draft. Webber was selected as the first overall pick in the ’93 NBA Draft by the Orlando Magic, again drawing comparisons to the great Magic Johnsons as the only sophomore to be drafted since Magic. Orlando immediately traded Webber to the Golden State Warriors to begin his 15-year NBA career, in which he was the NBA Rookie of the Year and 5 time NBA All-Star. After retiring from the game, Webber became an analyst for NBA TV and has remained in that role ever since.
