About Brian Keefe
Brian Keefe is an American professional basketball coach and the head coach of the Washington Wizards. Hailing from Winchester, Massachusetts, he was a standout former shooting guard as his high school’s all-time leading scorer (1,163 points, a record held for 24 years until 2018). He was inducted into the Winchester Sports Foundation Hall of Fame in 2004. He played college basketball at UC Irvine, earning All-Big West Second Team honors in 1995–96, and later at UNLV, he helped win the 1998 Western Athletic Conference Tournament and earned an NCAA Tournament berth.
Keefe’s coaching career began as a graduate assistant at the University of South Florida (2000–01) and assistant at Bryant University (2001–05), reaching the Division II Championship in 2005. He entered the NBA as a video coordinator for the San Antonio Spurs (2005–07), winning a championship in 2007. He served as an assistant coach for the Seattle SuperSonics/Oklahoma City Thunder (2007–14, 2019–20), New York Knicks (2014–16), Los Angeles Lakers (2016–19), and Brooklyn Nets (2021–23), specializing in defense and player development, notably with Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
Joining the Wizards as an assistant in July 2023, Keefe became interim head coach on January 25, 2024, after Wes Unseld Jr.'s dismissal, and was named the 26th head coach in franchise history.
