About Brandi Chastain
When Brandi Chastain hammered a penalty kick into the back of the net to win the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup to defeat China she launched herself into superstardom and women’s soccer to the forefront of athletics in the United States.
During her college days Chastain led Santa Clara University to consecutive Final Four appearances in 1989 and 1990 before graduating in 1991. During her time at Santa Clara she also played for the USA National Women’s Soccer Team, setting the stage for her eventual rise to fame as one of the top women’s defenders in the world. In the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup Final Chastain scored the winning penalty kick goal to defeat China, noting it as the greatest moment of her life on the soccer field.
With a degree in communications from Santa Clara, she returned to her alma mater in 1994 and served as an assistant coach for the Broncos until 2000. Currently she is in her fourth season as a volunteer assistant on the SCU coaching staff.
A champion of girls’ health, Chastain co-founded the Bay Area Women’s Sports Initiative in 2005 with a mission to create programs and partnerships through which women athletes bring health, hope, and wholeness to the community.
