Toronto FC Newcomer Sebastian Giovinco Wins MLS Landon Donovan MVP Award

The MLS added many international soccer stars to its roster this past season, but none ended up playing better than Sebastian Giovinco.  The Toronto FC attacker won the league’s Landon Donovan MVP Award this week after his banner campaign.

Giovinco broke the single season record for goals plus points.  He notched 22 goals and 16 assists while leading Toronto to the postseason.

The 28-year-old was a three-time MLS Player of the Week during the season and twice was honored as the Player of the Month.  In addition to MVP honors, Giovinco was also named to the MLX Best XI and was awarded the Newcomer of the Year trophy.

It was a season chock-full of highlights on the MLS stage for the “Atomic Ant”.  Making the postseason as a sixth-seed was also a first for Toronto and certainly impacted by Giovinco’s presence.

Along with his starring role in the MLS, Giovinco remains an important piece of the Italian national team.  He has competed for his country at prestigious tournaments like the 2008 Olympics, UEFA Euro 2012, and 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup.

Prior to arriving in Toronto, Giovinco played for Juventus and won two Serie A championships.  He also spent time on loan with the Italian clubs Empoli and Parma.
