The Virginia Commonwealth Games Names Olympic High Jump Champion Dick Fosbury Featured Speaker

The Virginia Commonwealth Games have a new home at Liberty University.  To christen the new setting, former Olympic high jump champion Dick Fosbury is the opening ceremonies featured speaker. 

The opening ceremonies of the Games will be held at the Vines Center on July 22nd.  The Virginia Commonwealth Games are the biggest multi-sport festival in the the state. 

Over that weekend, around 10,000 athletes will compete in over 60 sports.  Fosbury should have some unique stories and perfect inspriation for those competing. 

Fosbury was a revolutionary in the track and field world.  He created the first back-first jump, which was dubbed the "Fosbury Flop".  

At the 1968 Olympics, Fosbury set an Olympic record of seven feet, four and one quarter inches on the way to the gold.  Now, he technique dominates modern high jumping.  

Fosbury is a member of the USA Track and Field Hall of Fame, U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame and the World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame.  He remains an active force in the sport as an executive board member for the World Olympians Association.
