Former Dallas Cowboy Star Set to Inspire Business Leaders in South Texas

The Edinburg Chamber of Commerce is a member-driven organization in the Rio Grande Valley that promotes local economic growth, advocates for businesses, and enhances its community’s quality of life. They have announced Emmitt Smith as the keynote speaker for their upcoming business conference, “The Business Playbook,” taking place on April 23, 2026, at the Edinburg Conference Center at Renaissance. 

Smith is no stranger to the Lone Star State, widely regarded as one of the greatest running backs in football history. Drafted in the first round by the Dallas Cowboys in 1990 out of the University of Florida, he became the heart of the team's dynasty alongside Troy Aikman and Michael Irvin. Over 15 seasons, Smith set the NFL's all-time rushing record with 18,355 yards and 164 rushing touchdowns, which still stand today. He won three Super Bowls (XXVII, XXVIII, XXX), earned Super Bowl MVP in XXVIII, and was named NFL MVP in 1993.

However, he’s not only a titan on the gridiron. After retirement, he transitioned into roles as a business owner and philanthropist. Reflecting on his drive, Smith shared in a promotional video announcing his involvement with the first-year event: “If you want something bad enough, you’ve got to make that sacrifice. You’ve got to pay the price for it.”

Ronnie Larralde, executive director of the chamber, said Smith’s participation reflects the kind of leadership and alignment between sports and business performance, especially in teamwork, preparation, and long-term planning. “This is the caliber of leadership, excellence, and insight that we’re bringing right here to Edinburg,” he said.

The conference will include breakout sessions, networking opportunities, and thoughtful discussions on challenges facing every business sector.

An 8-time Pro Bowler and 4-time first-team All-Pro, Smith retired in 2004 and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2010. Known for his durability, vision, and consistency, he remains a Cowboys legend and NFL icon, inspiring people to achieve excellence on any playing field.
