Rookie Longshot Alexander Rossi Wins the Indianapolis 500

IndyCar is not known for producing unlikely winners.  That climate that benifits favorites is certainly in play at the series premier event, the Indianapolis 500.

Despite the barriers to victory, rookie driver Alexander Rossi was victorious in the 100th running of "The Greatest Spectacle In Racing".  The American was a 66 to 1 shot to win before the race.

To beat the odds, Rossi implemented a flawless fuel strategy that allowed him to stretch his final tank of gas out over the final 90 miles.  It caused him to run out of gas after capturing the checkered flag.

Rossi is the ninth rookie to win the Indy 500, but the first since legend Helio Castroneves in 2001.  Perhaps even more signifcant to the history of the sport is that he won the race running with Bryan Herta Autosport and Andretti Autosport.

350,000 fans packed the stand to watch Rossi race to grab the Borg-Warner Trophy and record the first sellout in the history of the event.  He is certain to see his star climb after previously being locked in limbo with his racing career.

Prior to coming to IndyCar this year, Rossi was focused on racing in Formula 1.  He ran five races on that circuit in 2015 and still is a reserve driver for Manor Racing.
