North Carolina A&T Names Women’s Boxing Icon Laila Ali Commencement Speaker

North Carolina A&T is welcoming women's boxing icon Laila Ali to commencement this spring. Ali will speak at their main ceremony for undergraduates on May 13th at Greensboro Coliseum at 8:30 a.m.

The event is open to the public and it will be followed by commencement for master's and doctoral students. It is the first time that N.C. A&T is holding a separate ceremony for advanced degree recipients.

N.C. A&T is one of the oldest public universities in the United States. Ali should have some inspirational words and may even channel her father, the sports legend, Muhammad Ali.

Ali went 24-0 in a boxing career that spanned from 1999-2007. At one time or another, she held the WBC, WIBA, IWBF and IBA female super middleweight titles as well as the IWBF light heavyweight title.

In 2001, Ali fought Jacqui Frazier-Lyde in the first ever pay-per-view boxing card to be headlined by women. Two years later, she defeated a pioneer in the sport, Christy Martin

Ali has been a popular personality in pop culture and was a contestant on season four of "Dancing with the Stars." She has hosted several television programs and published the book, "Reach!: Finding Strength, Spirit and Personal Power," in 2002.
