NBA Coaching NBA Coaching Pioneer Becky Hammon Inspires as a Keynote Speaker

San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Becky Hammon has achieved plenty of firsts in the NBA. That kind of inspirational story to the top of a male-dominated sport has made her an in-demand keynote speaker for a number of groups.

Recently, Hammon was able to be a virtual speaker for a group of New York-based young people as part of MSG Networks and the Garden Dreams Foundation's "MSG Networks Classroom." The series engages students at the Bronx's Fannie Lou Hamer Freedom High School.

Former NBA All-Star Allan Houston conducted a moderated Q&A with Hammon touched on lessons she has learned and key moments in her life.

“Well into adulthood, you have to be careful of the voices that you listen to,” Hammon said. “You got to guard your eyes, what you’re seeing, you got to guard your ears, what you’re hearing, because eventually that stuff seeps into your heart. I think what settles into your heart is eventually what you become.”

Hammon is the most successful member of the wave of female coaches who have excelled at the highest level in recent years. She was the first full-time NBA or major North American pro sports assistant when she was hired by the Spurs in 2014. She added other firsts as the head coach of the Spurs' Summer League team in 2015 and as San Antonio's acting head coach earlier this season when Gregg Popovich was ejected from a game.

Hammon has been able to learn from basketball legends around her like Popovich and future NBA Hall of Famers like Tim Duncan. She says that ability to take things from others and be a life-long student is pivotal.

“Coming in there, being willing to listen, it doesn’t matter if you’re an assistant coach, head coach, best player on the team you always have to be willing to learn and be open-minded to growth, critique and you take it all in and you move on. You use what you can use, and then you got to spit out the bones.”

In addition to the on-the-job experience Hammon has received, she came into the NBA with impressive basketball credentials. She was a three-time All-American in college at Colorado State and parlayed that into a successful WNBA career where she was a six-time All-Star.

As a keynote speaker, Hammon now combines the playing and coaching expertise to deliver a powerful message to corporate groups, universities, and more. Her impact is only expected to grow, with many people expecting her to eventually take over the Spurs or for someone else to make her the first full-time female NBA head coach.
