Gold Medal Winner Allison Schmitt Speaks at Maranda’s Beautiful U

Maranda's Beautiful U was held recently in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The event took place at Ferris State University and was meant to empower young girls.

Olympic champion Allison Schmitt was one who spoke to those assembled. She talked about overcoming her battle with depression to achieve success in the pool.

Schmitt emphasized that it is ok for girls going through problems to reach out to someone. Almost 140 middle school students from five different districts were in attendance.

Schmitt made her Olympic debut in 2008 and took home a bronze medal in the 4x200-meter freestyle relay. In 2012, she had a dominant performance on the Olympic stage, winning five medals.

Three of those medals were gold and Schmitt also set a new Olympic record in the 200-meter freestyle. She returned in 2016 to win two more medals in relay competition.

Schmitt also has six World Championship medals. While at the University of Georgia, she was a four-time individual NCAA champion and helped the Bulldogs win the 2013 team title.
