Former Pittsburgh Steelers Standout Rocky Bleier Speaks at Sunrise Sunset Gala

The Bradley Sunrise Rotary Club recently brought a sports star from yesteryear in to speak at their annual fundraising event. Pittsburgh Steelers great Rocky Bleier was the speaker for the Sunrise Sunset Gala.

The event was held at the Cleveland Country Club. It raised $67,000 for charity initiatives in the local community and throughout the rest of the world.

Overall, these fundraising galas have raised almost $800,000. This year, Bleier shared his personal story of overcoming adversity.

Bleier was a fullback for the Steelers for over a decade and won four Super Bowls. He is best remembered for leaving after his rookie season to serve in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

Bleier was injured in battle, lost part of his right foot and was told by doctors that he would never play football again. He received a Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

Bleier defied the odds, fighting through being waived even twice to carve out a successful football career. In 1976, he teamed with Franco Harris to become just the second pair of teammates to each rush for 1,000 yards in a single season.
