Commercial Appeal Names Former NFL Running Back DeAngelo Williams Speaker for Sports Awards

Prior to any of his NFL success, running back DeAngelo Williams built his legacy in the game at the University of Memphis. He will be back in town this spring as the featured speaker at the Commercial Appeal Sports Awards.

Local student-athletes will be recognized at the second annual event that is sponsored by Farm Bureau Health Plans. It takes place on June 5th at The Orpheum.

Individual tickets are available for $24 and people can also purchase four packs for $76. As someone who rose to prominence from their own backyard, Williams' presentation should be particularly impactful for the attendees.

Williams holds NCAA Division I records with 34 100-yard rushing games and 7,573 all-purpose yards. He ranks fourth in NCAA history in rushing yards and was a first-team All-American in 2005.

The Carolina Panthers chose Williams in the first round of the 2006 NFL Draft. In 2008, he set franchise records with 1,515 rushing yards and 18 rushing touchdowns and was named a second-team All-Pro.

Williams had another 1,000-yard rushing campaign in 2009 and was named to the Pro Bowl. He spent the final two seasons of his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers and led the NFL with 11 rushing touchdowns in 2011.
