Baseball Hall of Famer Jim Rice Speaks at Safeco Field Awards Banquet Next Month

Baseball Hall of Famer Jim Rice is scheduled to speak at an event for the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. On January 25th, he will be present as the Hutch Award is handed out at Safeco Field in Seattle, Washington. 

Miami Marlins relief pitcher Dustin McGowan is receiving the award. He is receiving the honor for the work he does at the Diabetes Research Institute in Miami. 

Registration and the silent auction begins at 11:30 a.m. and the program follows from 12-1:30 p.m. Guests who want to attend are asked to make a donation of over $150. 

Rice spent his entire 16-year career with the Boston Red Sox. He was an eight-time American League All-Star, compiled 2,452 hits and hit 382 home runs. 

In 1978, Rice was named the AL Most Valuable Player when he was the first player in 19 years to collect 400 total bases. Overall, he led the league in homers three times and RBI twice. 

The Red Sox retired Rice's #14 in 2009. That same year, he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame on the final ballot.
