Alabama Basketball Coach Avery Johnson Named Keynote Speaker at Hall of Fame Banquet

There is no question that former NBA point guard and head coach Avery Johnson is a charismatic speaker.  Johnson will put his energetic personality on display September 3rd when he is the keynote speaker at the Tivy Athletic Hall of Fame banquet.

Tivy is located just up the road from Johnson’s former home as a player with the San Antonio Spurs.  The event will be held at the Inn of the Hills Resort and Conference Center from 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Tickets for the ceremony and to see Johnson speak are $40.  They can be purchased at Finley Financial Services until August 31st.

Johnson has a new gig this fall as the head coach of Alabama basketball.  He hopes to provide the Crimson Tide with the experience he accrued over a 16-year playing career and seven seasons as a head coach in the pros.

His greatest coaching success came with the Dallas Mavericks.  Johnson was named NBA Coach of the Year in 2006, took the Mavs to the final that seasons, and guided the franchise to the playoffs in each of his four years.

Johnson had been accustomed to winning from his playing days.  While originally undrafted, he ended up being a key piece for the Spurs, helping the franchise win its first championship in 1999.

San Antonio also retired his number six jersey.  Johnson spent time with five other franchises and finished with over 8,000 points scored and nearly 6,000 assists.
