Former Notre Dame Basketball Coach Digger Phelps Holds South Bend Book Signing

On Thursday, former Notre Dame basketball coach Digger Phelps is holding a special event in South Bend, Indiana. He is hosting a pre-launch book signing for "Father Ted Hesburgh: He Coached Me."

The event begins at 7 p.m. at the Hammes Notre Dame Bookstore. The book is not slated for release until June 1st.

With the book, Phelps tells the story about his relationship with former Notre Dame president Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh. In 2015, Hesburgh passed away at the age of 97.

Phelps spent 20 years as the head coach of the Fighting Irish and compiled a 393-195 record. He guided Notre Dame to 14 NCAA Tournament appearances and the program's only trip to the Final Four in 1978.

Phelps shares a coaching record with seven upsets over a number one ranked team. Prior to arriving in South Bend, he led Fordham to the Sweet 16 in his one season as head coach.

Phelps began his coaching career as an assistant at Penn. Following his departure from Notre Dame, he was a top college basketball analyst for ESPN.
