Former Baseball Star Al Oliver Speaks at MLK Day Celebration in Southeastern Ohio

On Monday, former Major League Baseball star Al Oliver had the unique distinction of talking about the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He was the speaker at the Southeastern Ohio NAACP's celebration for Dr. King. 

The event was hosted at Paint Creek Regular Missionary Baptist Church in Gallipolis. There were also three MLK Contest winners that were announced and got to present their own speeches. 

The celebration was free and open to the public. Attendees were interested to here Oliver's take on race relations throughout the years and his own journey coming up in baseball.

Oliver had an 18-year big league career and was one of the finest outfielders of his generation. He spent the first decade of his career with the Pittsburgh Pirates where he won a World Series in 1971. 

Overall, Oliver was a seven-time All-Star. He won three straight Silver Slugger awards from 1980-82 while being the batting champion and RBI leader in the National League in 1982. 

Oliver retired after the 1985 season with over 2,700 hits. His 2014 book, "Life is a Hit, Don't Strike Out," talked about his life and career in greater detail.
